The City of White Rock will be hosting Virtual Canada Day by the Bay in 2021 and would like your suggestions and feedback to help us plan the online event.
With COVID-19 preventing large-group gatherings this summer, the City of White Rock invites the community to gather virtually this year to celebrate Canada’s 154th birthday. Even though we can’t physically be together, we will still be able to come together and celebrate Canada.

Just checked online and 3 reflector badges for$14.50. White Rock could put a small city logo sticker or a small Canada Flag sticker on each of them. (I’ll recruit some helpers to do this if needed) .

How about a contest for people to “name the bear “ memorial statue that’s at East Beach?

I sent this suggestion earlier today but unsure as to whether or not it actually got sent. My screen went black, no confirmation. I’m suggesting White Rock City supply every resident with a reflector item they can wear on their jacket, t-shirt or whatever. I’d like the theme to encourage “wear white at night” to keep all our pedestrians safe. Also helpful so drivers can see them. I lived in Malmo, Sweden years ago, and the city gave everyone a reflective 1 1/2 “ waterproof decoration they could clip onto their clothing. It was waterproof, and had a short string and a clip. White Rock could issue these shaped as MapleLeafs (for Canada Day) .the ones in Sweden were a snowflake, a ballon or another motif, like a leaf. These items could also be used as a fundraiser for community use (PAH, Food bank etc). Soooo many people wear black and it’s hard for drivers to see pedestrians at dusk. This would be a wonderful safety item. It was encouraged in the town I was in, in Sweden, for everyone in that town to wear one, and it created a great sense of community. We used these for many years. Wish I had one to share so you could see it... but it was many years ago.

Years ago I lived in Malmo, Sweden where every person was given a little waterproof reflector in the shape of a snowflake, a star or a balloon (you could choose). It was made of clear hard plastic, about 1 1/2 “ in diameter, on a short string and it had a clip like a safety pin. It was made to attach it to your jacket, t-shirt or whatever. Everyone wore them and it felt to like a membership your community. Everyone was encouraged to wear them all the time, but most importantly at dusk. They were reflective and contributed to the “wear white at night” theme, to be a safety measure. It would be awesome to have everyone in White Rock have one of these for each person. Additionally they could be sold for a few dollars each and the funds raised could benefit the community in some way. White Rock City could get one made that’s shaped like a Maple Leaf 🍁. We all know how important it is to be able to ‘see’ pedestrians at night, but so many people wear black clothing, or dark clothing, they’re hard to see at night. One reflector would help the pedestrians and drivers alike.

Use the Canada day funding to improve outdoor recreation in White Rock. Emerson park for example. You keep removing equipment but don’t replace it. Or build a new playground at east beach so kids don’t have to climb the grubby bear statue. Many of us spend all day working on computers and stuck inside, the last thing we want to do is the same for Canada day. Especially something that can be watched on YouTube.

Virtual Canada Day by the Bay in 2020 was great! The City put on a fun production for us to enjoy at home, and The Washboard Union were amazing!
I think having a kids show in the late afternoon/ early evening would be great. Maybe a colouring contest pre-Canada Day and the winner is announced during the broadcast?
