Accessibility Plan
In 2021, the Province of British Columbia passed the Accessible BC Act. This legislation requires municipalities (and other prescribed organizations) to establish an accessibility committee, develop an accessibility plan, and create a process for receiving comments from the public on the plan and on barriers individuals face in or interacting with the organization.
The City of White Rock will be creating an accessibility plan, a first step in identifying how we can improve accessibility in our City by the Sea.

Accessibility Parking Upgrades
White Rock’s Engineering & Operations Department and the Planning & Development Department worked in collaboration to repave the City Hall parking lot at 15322 Buena Vista Avenue.
The work included widening the parking space intended for accessible parking to better accommodate a wheelchair ramp. Future plans include adding a second wheelchair accessible stall at the waterfront parking lot near Elm Street.

Do you want to help make White Rock more accessible?
The City of White Rock is currently searching for volunteers to create the White Rock Accessibility Advisory Committee, in accordance with the Accessible BC Act. We are specifically looking for five to seven volunteers who have experienced accessibility challenges or disabilities. Furthermore, we are hoping to have committee members who represent a diverse range of underrepresented and equity-seeking groups, such as Indigenous Peoples, faith-based communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, new Canadians, those living in poverty, people from various ethnic or cultural backgrounds, seniors, women, and youth.
Committee members will contribute by:- Raising awareness about accessibility and inclusion of people with disabilities
- Participating in group discussions to identify, prevent, and eliminate barriers to accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities
- Setting internal accessibility standards and making recommendations to City Council on a range of initiatives
- Encouraging feedback about accessibility issues
Commitment & CollaborationThe committee will be comprised of members with varying disabilities who offer diverse perspectives. We aim to facilitate full participation for all members by making necessary accommodations. We acknowledge that every individual has a unique intersectionality and lived experience and cannot speak for an entire group or community. A diverse range of members will promote thoughtful and inclusive decision-making, resulting in equitable and effective outcomes.
The Accessibility Advisory Committee's duties will be fulfilled through in-person and/or virtual meetings held quarterly or as necessary. Our first Advisory Committee meeting will take place during the first week of August 2023 with an ambitious goal of publishing the City of White Rock’s Accessibility Plan by September 1, 2023.
Our aim is to not only represent the diverse population of BC but also acknowledge and promote the diversity of individuals with disabilities in British Columbia.
Application EligibilityWe welcome applications from individuals who represent diverse and underrepresented equity-seeking groups, including those mentioned earlier. Residency is not a requirement, but applicants should have a vested interest in our community. If you are under 18, please obtain parental consent before applying.
Application ProcessApplications can be submitted electronically using the provided link or can be requested by mail or email by contacting Accessibility@whiterockcity.ca or calling 604-541-2100 or by visiting White Rock City Hall, 15322 Buena Vista Avenue, during regular operating hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) Large print of the application will also be made available.
