Do you want to help make White Rock more accessible?

The City of White Rock is currently searching for volunteers to create the White Rock Accessibility Advisory Committee, in accordance with the Accessible BC Act. We are specifically looking for five to seven volunteers who have experienced accessibility challenges or disabilities. Furthermore, we are hoping to have committee members who represent a diverse range of underrepresented and equity-seeking groups, such as Indigenous Peoples, faith-based communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, new Canadians, those living in poverty, people from various ethnic or cultural backgrounds, seniors, women, and youth.

Committee members will contribute by:

  • Raising awareness about accessibility and inclusion of people with disabilities
  • Participating in group discussions to identify, prevent, and eliminate barriers to accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities
  • Setting internal accessibility standards and making recommendations to City Council on a range of initiatives
  • Encouraging feedback about accessibility issues

Commitment & Collaboration

The committee will be comprised of members with varying disabilities who offer diverse perspectives. We aim to facilitate full participation for all members by making necessary accommodations. We acknowledge that every individual has a unique intersectionality and lived experience and cannot speak for an entire group or community. A diverse range of members will promote thoughtful and inclusive decision-making, resulting in equitable and effective outcomes.

The Accessibility Advisory Committee's duties will be fulfilled through in-person and/or virtual meetings held quarterly or as necessary. Our first Advisory Committee meeting will take place during the first week of August 2023 with an ambitious goal of publishing the City of White Rock’s Accessibility Plan by September 1, 2023.

Our aim is to not only represent the diverse population of BC but also acknowledge and promote the diversity of individuals with disabilities in British Columbia.

We welcome applications from individuals who represent diverse and underrepresented equity-seeking groups, including those mentioned earlier.
